Our History
THE START
Originally started in 1985, Neil officially launched Wednesbury Car & Commercials Ltd. in 1989. Located on Leabrook Road in Wednesbury, with just Neil and his business partner doing everything at the business, it quickly became apparent they were onto something.
By the end of the 80s, the team had quickly grown to 5 to keep up with demand.
THE ‘90s
This chapter can be summed up as one of big change and growth. Following a compulsory purchase of the original unit due to the construction of the Black Country Route, the business moved a stones throw away, to the other side of the canal. Being twice the size, this presented an opportunity for growth and the workforce quickly doubled.
At this time the business built strong relationships with some of the biggest contract hire companies in the area, such as Ryders and Fraikin Welford
Unfortunately, in 1997, our founder Neil was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, leaving him unable to run the business for months. Enter Paul, who came to help run the show in his absence and a strong partnership was formed.
INTO THE MILLENIUM WITH A BANG
Whilst everyone was worried about catastrophic computer failures, no-one could have predicted a fire to start off the new millennium, causing absolute devastation.
However, problems can also be seen as opportunities, and whilst a temporary relocation to a friendly neighbour, Leewards for 7 months wasn’t ideal, a new state-of-the-art workshop was built from the ashes. This led to substantial contracts with the likes of Renault Trucks and ultimately investment interest.
In 2002, Wednesbury Car & Commercials became Bevan Vehicle Finishers Ltd as part of a merger with Bevan Group, bringing with it the next level of workload. The team grew by 50% and a second unit next door was taken to handle workshop capacity. Paul decides to explore options elsewhere and briefly leaves the business.
THE EARLY 2010s
Bevans needed accident/repair facility to service current customers’ fleets leading to an amicable demerger of the company in 2014, reviving Wednesbury Car & Commercials.
At this point, the business also introduces Neil’s son, Ben into the business to learn more about the industry.
A few years later, Paul returns to the business as a partner to help run the day-to-day operations of the Paint Shop. Paul’s wife Ange also joins to help with all admin, accounts and payroll.
2016 – INTRODUCING THE BODY SHOP
Following Paul’s return, it quickly became apparent that there was a lot of interest in repairs and further expanding the body building that had been done before. It was clear that there was no room at the current site, so the hunt began looking for a new site.
However, there simply wasn’t a site big enough to house everything so the decision (with a bit of encouragement from Ange) was made to operate from two separate workshops. The workshop on Leabrook Road in Wednesbury operated as the paint shop with a new site on Strawberry Lane in Willenhall became the body shop home, where vehicle repairs and body building would take place. Ultimately, Paul shouldered responsibility for the body shop, leaving Neil and Ben running the paint shop.
2022 - A NEW ERA
After over 30 years at the same address, due to the sale of the whole estate by the landlord for development, the paint shop was forced to move. A new workshop was found at Monmore Park Industrial estate in Ettingshall and a brand new facility was built.
TODAY
Now, running from two sites with three clear services and a workforce of over 30 (and growing), the business has never been stronger…
Paul & Ange’s son Mike recently joined as Commercial Director to modernise systems and processes whilst focussing on further growth and opportunities. With the Paint Shop making the most of the new facilities and the Body Shop stepping up into the world of commercial vehicle repair with a new dedicated workshop. We are now pleased to service networks such as TIP, Motor Repair Network, sopp+sopp and the Dawsongroup. The future is looking very bright indeed.
